It looks like it could be the road for the much-loved Lakeview staple.

According to DNAinfo, who first reported the story, Melrose Restaurant—a much-loved diner which has called the corner of Melrose and Broadway home for more than 50 years—now sports papered-over windows and was spotted with a "closed" sign on Tuesday. Phones calls were not being answered on Wednesday morning, and as Eater points out, the restaurant's website is down and their Grubhub listing states that Melrose is not taking online orders.

The Lakeview institution was a favorite late-night hang (it was 24-hours for much of its life) and a reliable brunch spot during the day. Chicago isn't exactly awash with great diners, especially compared to our East Coast friends; and it'll take another tough knock if this proves permanent.
