An 18-year-old has been charged in the fatal shooting of Arshell Dennis III, a Chicago police officer's son who was gunned down outside his home the same day he was set to return to college.

18-year-old Anthony Moore is charged with murder in the fatal shooting from last year, police announced on Friday morning. More details are expected to be announced at a press conference on Friday, at 12:30 p.m.

Dennis, 19, was shot and killed on August 14, 2016. He and an acquaintance, 20, were sitting on the porch of his home, in the 2900 block of West 82nd Street when, at around midnight, a gunman shot both men. Dennis was fatally struck in the chest; the other man was wounded but lived. Neither victim had a criminal record or gang affiliations, CPD spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told the Tribune last year.

Dennis was home from university visiting family and was scheduled to return to New York just a few hours later. His father, Arshell Dennis, is a DEA Task Force Officer with the Chicago Police Department. The older Dennis worked alongside Supt. Eddie Johnson in the early '90s on the city’s South Side.

"Officer Dennis dedicated his life to make this city safer, and Arshell was a good kid, making his parents proud and studying for a promising future," Johnson said at the time of the killing.
