Photo: Pothole Season Is Coming For Us

It's the most magical time of year! It's early spring—so, pothole season—but still close enough to frosty weather that people have "Falling Ice" signs handy. Hence this photo, which makes me think of nothing more than an ice anvil falling down on our Trump-supporting state from... heaven?

Caution: Falling Ice

Really, as our EIC Rachel Cromidas patiently explained to me, it's a "Falling Ice" sign repurposed to mark a normal, non-apocalyptic pothole on West Hubbard Street, across the street from Courthouse Place. Or maybe it's a mildly apocalyptic pothole? It's quite deep!

If you're curious about why early spring brings so many potholes with it, the New York Times broke down the science behind the phenomenon in 2015: Essentially, they're caused by cars driving over pavement "compromised by water," which inundates the streets in spring due to rain-showers and snowmelt.
