7-Year-Old Dead After Likely Shooting Himself In The Head

A seven-year-old boy died of a gunshot wound to the head on the South Side Saturday.
Preliminary evidence suggests Devon Lofton accidentally shot himself, though detectives plan to test for gunshot residue on his hands for more conclusive proof—a test that was still pending this morning, a community activist working with the family told the Tribune.
Lofton died in an Englewood home, located in the 6700 block of South Aberdeen Street, authorities say. The shooting took place there just before 4 p.m., and Lofton was taken to the Comer Children's Hospital immediately afterwards. He was announced dead within half an hour, authorities said.
Detectives are still investigating who the gun belongs to and whether it was legally owned.
