The White Sox were unable to play spoiler on Thursday, falling to the Kansas City Royals 6-3. The Royals are now just one win, or a Seattle loss, away from making the playoffs for the first time since 1985. KC beat Jose Quintana in his final start of the year, where he let up five runs in seven-and-a-third innings. For the White Sox, Josh Phegley homered for the first time in 2014, a two-run shot that drove in Jordan Danks. Danks singled to score Moises Sierra for the Sox's final run of the game. The Royals' Eric Hosmer hit his ninth homer of the season and drove in two runs, while Lorenzo Cain had four hits and scored twice. James shields started for KC and pitched six innings, but Kelvin Herrera got the win in relief. Quintana finishes the season with a 9-11 record despite a 3.32 ERA in 32 starts. He also crossed the 200 inning threshold for the second straight year.

The White Sox host KC for three more games this weekend to close out the season, with tributes to the retiring Paul Konerko scheduled throughout.
