Riot Fest Announces 10th Anniversary Chicago Lineup

An excited Riot Fest fan.
Had you asked me ten years ago if Riot Fest would grow into my favorite Chicago festival I'm sure my response would have been a blank look of disbelief. Look, I like the punk rock, and I'm old enough to realize just how broadly the phrase "punk rock" should be stretched before you start passing judgement on someone.*
But here we are ten years later and it has grown into my favorite Chicago festival. There are lots of reasons behind this, but I think the biggest one is how proud I am that a truly independent and still DIY organization would build something this big out of love for music and the neighborhood they live in (because I do think those things are intertwined).
This is no small feat, especially since Riot Fest remains in the control of a small crew of true music lovers and hasn't fallen under the sway of popular opinion or demand of return against the bottom dollar. Now that is punk rock.
With the announcement of the 10th anniversary bill taking place in Chicago's Humboldt Park Sept. 12-14, the little festival that could has turned into the big 'ol festival that does. What other festival mixes The Cure, Jane's Addiction, The Flaming Lips, Weezer, Cheap Trick, The Wu Tang Clan and ?????? (still more to come?!) as headliners while providing an undercard including Afghan Whigs, Superchunk, Naked Raygun, Patti Smith, Pussy Riot, 7 Seconds, The Dandy Warhols, and so many other bands it is ridiculous. Holy mackerel.
Riot Fest wins the Chicago festival line-up for the summer of 2014. Seriously. Hell, they even have the Mighty Might Bosstones! Who knew they were even still together? And I can't wait to see them? Because, with this line up, I'm 17 again!
Oh wait, and what? The Pizza Underground? Is there anyone Riot Fest CAN'T get to play for them? Probably not at this point.
Check in tomorrow for our interview with Riot Fest founder Mike Petryshyn a.k.a. Riot Mike about the history of Riot Fest, its move to Humboldt Park, and who he's most looking forward to on this year's bill.
O.K.
