Pencil This In: Guy Fawkes Beer At Bar On Buena

By Chuck Sudo in Food on Nov 4, 2013 6:45PM

2013_11_4_PTI.jpg On Nov. 5, 1605, Catholic revolutionary Guy Fawkes plotted to assassinate Protestant King James I by blowing up the House of Lords. The "gunpowder plot," as it became known, was discovered and Fawkes was arrested guarding a stash of gunpowder hidden under Westminster Palace. He was questioned, tortured and eventually he broke. Before his execution by hanging, he threw himself off the scaffold and broke his neck. Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated every year in England by burning Fawkes' effigy in a bonfire. Guy Fawkes masks are also popular accessories with activists.

Guy Fawkes plays a role at Bar on Buena's monthlong UK beer celebration. Starting at 7 p.m. tomorrow night the Uptown bar will be tapping some select English beers including Thornbridge's Jaipur IPA, Strong Scotch Ale and the Thornbridge/Terrapin Coalition Imperial Rye ESB; Wild Beer's Somerset Saison; Fullers ESB and Greene King Abbot Ale. The beers are priced at $6 and customers who wear a Guy Fawkes mask will receive $1 off their purchases. This may be the first time in recent memory where a Guy Fawkes mask may be worth wearing.

Bar on Buena is located at 910 W. Buena.
