We hear it all the time: "I love funk but I wish there was more substance behind the band!"

Okay, so maybe that's not a totally common complaint, but it is worth noting that up and coming band FuzZz has both beats and brains.

A sure contender for the most highly educated band in Chicago, FuzZz is led by Sliman Bensmaia and Dave Freedman, partners at the University of Chicago neurology and neurobiology departments, respectively. Moreover, the five-piece has members who studied in the realms of the Oberlin Conservatory and Berklee School of Music. Simply put, this band isn't short on skills.

Despite the fact that FuzZz primarily bills itself as a funk act, we took away definitive jazz vibes from the live recordings and demos the members have posted to their Soundcloud page. Chances are, if you enjoy any type of soulful, instrumental improve, you'll dig on FuzZz.

Catch them tomorrow, Sept. 28, playing two sets at Bernice’s Tavern in Bridgeport. They go on at 9 p.m. and again at 10:30 p.m.
