This Wednesday, Jesse Malmed will present "Video Playlist: Talk American," a live, participatory performance and video screening. Video Playlist is a recurring series of one-night-only public video screenings that are guest curated in response to Museum of Contemporary Photography exhibitions.

This program is presented in conjunction with MoCP’s current exhibition Peripheral Views: States of America, which revolves around the search for a picture of contemporary America. Featuring works by Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Veronica Corzo-Duchardt, Martin Hyers & William Mebane, Liz Magic Laser, Michael Mergen, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, Object Orange, Doug Rickard, and Harry Shearer, the show “reflects a contemporary American experience that is larger than any single person or community, and complex beyond concise explanation.”

The works in "Talk American" explore how language, in its vast complexity, shapes an individual’s experience of reality. Spanning a vast range of ideas, including what Microsoft Word found wrong with the Unabomber, a political speech about political speech, and how jargon becomes gibberish, the screening offers a unique study of what it means to “talk American.” Following the screening, see selections from The Body Electronic, a series of participatory video-based performances, presented by Malmed.

The screening features the work of Joe Sandler, Peter Rose, Peggy Ahwesh, Doug Hall, Gabrielle De Vietri, Stephanie Barber, and Jesse Malmed. Video Playlist: Talk American is this Wednesday, September 12, at 6 p.m. at Columbia College Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography. The MoCP is located at 600 S. Michigan Avenue in the South Loop. The show is free and open to the public.
