Beer
Naperville's Solemn Oath Brewing has been arguably the best new addition to Chicago's craft beer scene this year. Solemn Oath continues its impressive run with the release of "Whisper Kisses," a saison that combines the funky earthiness emblematic of a saison with the strong citrus hoppiness of American ales. Whisper Kisses gets a release party 6 p.m. tonight at the Bluebird (1749 N. Damen Ave.). The Bluebird only has a single cask of Whisper Kisses and those five gallons are expected to go quickly.
Film
Mae West wrote and starred in the pre-Hays Code film I'm No Angel, which is notable because this is one of a handful of Mae West movies that wasn't subjected to heavy censorship. That means West is at her risque, hip-shaking peak as a singer in a carnival sideshow whose curves and nerve distract audience members long enough for her pickpocket boyfriend to do his thing. After an encounter with a carnival customer leads to the dissolution of West's partnership with her pickpocket, she becomes a star in the carnival's lion taming act and gets the attention of Cary Grant, until the pickpocket returns to break up the relationship in order keep West in the carnival. The film touches on many subjects, notably the concept of palimony. West also performed some of her own stunts in the film. I'm No Angel plays at the Music Box 11:30 a.m. Sept. 9 as part of the theater's retrospective of pre-Hays Code movies. (3733 N. Southport Ave.)
