No one knows exactly when Jack Daniel was born—courthouse records were destroyed in a town fire and conflicting dates on his and his mother's gravestones put the date in question. But that isn't stopping the folks at The Southern from celebrating his birthday anyway. Starting 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 The Southern will feature $5 Jack Daniels cocktails, $3 Shiner Bocks, and have a pig roast served with Jack Daniels incorporated side dishes. Live music will start at 5 p.m. (1840 W. North Ave., $18, tickets available online by clicking here.)
Exhibits
The Newberry Library celebrates its quasquicentennial (that's a mouthful) with an exhibition of 125 of the library's exhaustive catalog. Among the featured items are the original printed (and never-bound) instantiation of Voltaire’s Candide; an elliptical postcard from Jack Kerouac to his editor; rare correspondence from a slave husband to his free wife; Joseph Whitehouse’s journal from the Lewis and Clark Expedition. There will also be a separate exhibition of items related directly to the Newberry's history. "Newberry 125" kicks off with a grand opening celebration 6 p.m. tonight. It's free to attend. (60 W. Walton St.)
