During the Spanish Civil War, forty thousand men and women from fifty-two countries, including 2,800 Americans, traveled to Spain to join the International Brigades to help fight fascism. The U.S. volunteers served in various units (medical, combat and transportation) and came to be known collectively as the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Eddie Balchowsky was a legendary pianist, artist, bohemian and a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade who lost his hand in battle, which ended his hopes of becoming a concert pianist. The arts group portoluz presents Pasiones: Songs of the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939. Inspired by the music of Balchowsky, Michael Smith and Jamie O'Reilly with Peter Glazer have put together 20 stirring songs, sung in six languages, accompanied by the images of the war and the posters of the era. (SPACE, 1245 Chicago Ave., Evanston, 3 p.m.)
