Get Lost At Found Sound

Music fests tend to come with a few unappealing elements, like swarming crowds, blatant commercialism, insultingly expensive beer and soaring stages. Found Sound takes a different approach to festing that cuts out much of this gristle. This 1-day fest will spread nine mostly experimental acts across several intimate spaces and unusual venues in Ukrainian Village and West Town.

The whole thing kicks off this Saturday at 1 p.m. with a performance by Plastic Crimewave, who will play on a residential front porch. Other notable sets include a traveling show by Heartichoke (they start off at Corbett vs. Dempsey and make their way round the Village), a garage show/yard sale by Matthew Hale Clark of White/Light, and Piss Piss Piss Moan Moan Moan at Permanent Records. The final act, Judson Claiborne, goes on at 6 p.m. at Rainbo Room, but stick around after the set for the Found Sound after party.

While you don’t have to deal with packed crowds, you do have to find a way to get around the neighborhood. The Reader suggests biking your way through the fest, and we totally agree. You may also want to click your way over to Found Sound’s site for the fest’s full program and a map.

Of course, Found Sound isn’t much different from any typical weekend in any given neighborhood - these types of small, little-known shows are going on every night all over the city. But for one day, Found Sound makes them accessible to those of us not involved in the underground community. Oh, and plus it’s completely free. There will certainly be opportunities to donate to bands and venues, which you definitely should, because what costs you one beer helps fund future shows, underground fests and other endeavors that make this city such an amazing place to be a musician.
