2011_3_DiGilio_TasteHeaven.JPGWhile so many restaurants come and go, there are some neighborhood eateries that never seem to go out of style. Whether it is a popular menu of quality food or familiar and friendly faces in the seats and behind the counter, consistency and innovation are the keys to survival. Serving patrons since 1994, Andersonville’s A Taste of Heaven is a survivor. Good food, friendly staff, and a loyal following have made it a popular neighborhood destination and one of the gems of North Clark Street.

For almost 20 years running, locals have been lining up for the weekend brunch at A Taste of Heaven. It is one of their specialties. Omelets, pancakes, and french toast - they serve them all with their own unique twists. The Katie Cakes, for example, feature traditional buttermilk pancakes delicately layered with a berry compote that is flavored with clove and lemon. They are served with whipped cream cheese and lemon streusel in a real melange of savory morning flavors. One of our favorites is the Eggs Verde, a three-egg omelet bursting with pesto, tomatoes, provolone, and fresh spinach. The potatoes they serve on the side are especially not to be missed. The portions are generous and the coffee keeps pouring.

In addition to its famous brunches, A Taste of Heaven also serves hearty lunch and dinner entrees. Regardless of the time of day, there always seems to be a good crowd on hand keeping the place lively. One of the other big draws to this corner eatery is its daily selection of tantalizing baked goods. A Taste of Heaven is known for its cakes. Cupcakes, layer cakes, and even bundt cakes, all are baked fresh. Chocolate lovers will want to hit their food coma by topping off any meal with the triple cocoa assault that is the Cho-Cho-Cho cupcake. If light and fruity flavors are your thing, the Lemon Cloud layer cake lives up to the restaurant’s name and is perfect with a cup of coffee or tea. You could go back every day for weeks and not run out of sweet treats to try. Of course, we recommend you get started now.

For a restaurant to be packing the patrons in for so long means that it is doing something right. At A Taste of Heaven, they have been doing a lot of things right for almost two decades. Yes, their name aims high. Luckily, the food and service deliver. The next time you are in Andersonville, stop by. After all, doesn’t everyone deserve a taste of heaven once in a while? The weekends get busy, but some things are simply worth the wait.

A Taste of Heaven is located at 5401 North Clark Street.
