Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin Rediscovers Lost Chicago Power-Pop

I once described Missouri-based indie-rock group Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin to a friend as a band of guys who look like Michael Cera who play music that sounds like something Michael Cera would make. Having said that, a news release of the preciously named band's piqued my interest, as it had a surprising Chicago music connection. Along with tour mates Telekinesis, SSYBY have released a cover of "Gotta Get A Record Out" by Chicago power-pop group Green.

Green has had something of a renaissance in the past year since their early records, including their second self-titled album, were re-released. Green has been putting out material as recently as 2009, but first came to prominence in the early 80s, when their jangly, unpolished yet melodic sound earned them comparisons to then-contemporaries like R.E.M. and The Replacements. Green never achieved the commercial success of the former, nor are they quite the critical darlings that the latter are. So it's pretty cool to see some relative up-and-comers pay homage to a seemingly lost corner of Midwest power-pop.

As compared to the original, the SSLYBY/Telekinesis version follows the script pretty much, though the production here is a little more lo-fi in a modern way. (Think the garage-rock/punk that everyone loves these days). You can listen for yourself below.
