Movies & Music Roundup

Movies and music go together like David and Maddie, and there's a lot of both going on in Chicago at the moment:
- Don't forget about CIMMfest, which opens on Thursday! Tickets to the Opening Night Party are still available. Lech Kowalski's video Camera War will be chopped up and reconfigured live by VJ Boris while DJ Mimetic adds a soundtrack. Oh, and there's free Red Stripe until 8:30.
- On Saturday, U of C's Film Studies Center hosts Pictures and Sounds 2009, an annual event that unites some of Chicago's finest avant-garde musicians and sound artists with obscure silent films. While classic experimental and industrial shorts are being projected, various musicians will improvise live soundtracks. The lineup includes Vertonen, Lord of the Yum Yum, Pillars and Tongues, and Christmas Woods (the films have not been announced). The event is cosponsored by studio radio station WHPK and starts at 7.
- The Chicago Opera Theater is running a YouTube contest for free subscriptions to their Spring season. Create and upload a video answering the question "Why Do You Deserve Free Tickets to Chicago Opera Theater?" and you could be one of three winners; runners-up get a free pass to the final dress rehearsal of Mozart's La clemenza di Tito. The contest runs through April 1. And if you create a really cool video, send us the link. Who knows, you could end up as a future Diversion!
