Roll with the Pack

2008_10_wcr_tryouts.jpgThe rough 'n' tumble ladies of the Windy City Rollers are on the prowl for new pivots, blockers, and jammers (those would be teammates). A second “interest meeting” of sorts is set for Monday, October 20: Those who are up for the challenge must then commit to the November 1 tryout session after watching a scrimmage and turning in completed paperwork. Email them if you're interested.

There’s really no better time to get involved, seeing as how the league is rolling its way into UIC Pavilion for the first time October 25 against the Carolina Rollergirls. Having spent the last several seasons at Cicero Stadium west of the city — and their first season in the relatively tiny confines of the Congress Theatre — the Windy City Rollers, members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, are working to professionalize a sport currently known more for stage names and fake fights than actual athleticism. In addition to moving within city limits, the nationally ranked No. 7 team will now be battling it out in a venue with a capacity of 10,000. Visit their website for more info on league rules, tryout times and upcoming bouts. And don’t forget your kneepads.
