Jeff Non-Equity Nominations Revealed

By Justin Sondak in Arts & Entertainment on May 2, 2008 3:45PM

2008_05_jeff.gifThe Joseph Jefferson awards committee announced this year's Non-Equity Jeff award nominees (formerly known as "Jeff citations") last night. At a minute after midnight, Chris, Chris & Kris posted the list to the Trib and Time Out Chicago blogs, respectively. The most-nominated companies— are Bailiwick Repertory Theatre and Oak Park's Circle Theatre, with a baker’s dozen and dozen mentions each, respectively. Lifeline Theatre's The Island of Dr. Moreau is in contention for nine play-related awards while Theo Ubique’s Cabaret is the musical given most attention.

Time Out respectfully took the Jeffs to task for some stellar shows undercited or completely omitted from the list. We’re similarly dismayed that The Hypocrites' revisionist Miss Julie was shut out. Also, it’s hard to believe Redmoon Theater couldn't nab a least a technical nomination for their imaginative work. And WNEP's surprisingly funny and accessible Soiree Dada deserves some love.

The Non-Equity Jeff Awards Ceremony is June 9 at the Park West, 322 West Armitage. Doors open at 6 p.m., trophy distribution and tearful speeches begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 advance, $40 at the door. More info at the Jeff Awards site.
