February in Chicago: Cold

By Margaret Lyons in News on Feb 11, 2008 8:53PM

2008_2_11.winterwhite.jpgThe City's nipples have permanently shifted into cut-glass state, but there's more cold on the way, and the National Weather Center says there's a 100 percent chance of precipitation tonight. There's a chance of snow later this week, too, and if you've been wondering what the difference is between sleet and hail, wonder no more.

Seems like a lot of snow, yes? But according to our beloved Ask Tom, it's not quite record-breaking — as of Saturday, the official snow measure was 47.4 inches at Midway, which puts this year as the fifth-snowiest at this point. (Chicago's snowiest winter ever, 1978-79, had 79.2 inches by February 9.) [S-T, Ask Tom, National Weather Service]
