Illinois Three, Indiana Zip

Of Fortune Magazine's pick for the 100 best places to work, Illinois companies showed up three times. We're not positive if any of them are somewhere that you work, or that you plan on working when you're done making ends meet with waitressing and bartending jobs, but it's still a nice nod from the wider world of money-making.

hang.jpgThe three companies listed were CDW Corp., Vernon Hills (technology solutions); Jones Lang LaSalle, Chicago (real estate); and Northwest Community Hospital (hospitalling). The list is based two-thirds on a survey of over 100,000 employees from about 450 companies and one-third on Fortune's evaluation of each company's responses to the institute's Culture Audit.

California kicked every other state's ass this year, but the Midwest didn't do so bad, with Wisconsin and Michigan also clocking three and Indiana with zero. Oh, we don't know why we had to do that, we know there's probably some great places to work in Gary. We're probably just pissed at California, technology, and degrees in the booming liberal arts industry (pbbft).

The list is interesting no matter what state you live in, however, because it includes things like the size of the company, the number of women and minorities, benefits and salary. Oh, and based on the winner this year, Google, whether or not you get to have fun at work, and eat gourmet food for free. Damn you, Google, for making us yearn! Maybe we'll just start yearning for the attainable jobs on the list.
