Lemonheads Lean On The Past

Lemonheads leader Evan Dando is a music fan of wide ranging tastes. His choice of covers, both in concert and in the studio, pays testament to this with some of his most famous choices reworking tunes by The Misfits, Paul & Simon, and Suzanne Vega. So it's not surprising that his latest album Varshons, performed with the umpteenth incarnation of his band, should tackle covers with a dizzying variety of sources.

It's easy to get burned out on "blogger buzz" bands. For every Arcade Fire there are dozens of Clap Your Hands Say Blahs / Vampire Weekends. Every once in a while, the buzz factor gets it right though, and it's in this rare intersection of hype and talent that Black Kids is lucky enough to occupy.

Friday, April 25:

Honestly, the last time The Lemonheads were in town they blew us away. Evan Dando carries an unfair reputation of putting on shambolic shows, and while that may have been true in the past, we've never seen that side of him. Sure, on-stage he can come across as a pleasantly buzzed good-time dude between songs, but once the music starts, he's locked into each and every song, injecting a ruggedness into his sweet pop tunes.

The Teenagers have been steadily conquering the '80s-fixated dance rock crowd, first coming to our attention via remix efforts, notably the Yuksek "Homecoming remix and the "Fuck Nicole" SLUTTT Ketateen remix. While both those songs prepared us for the notion that The Teenagers had a wicked sense of humor based on dueling worldviews and less than rosy views on love, we weren't prepared for the simplicity, and directness, of the group's material sans remixers.

Ah, late February in Chicago. Cubs tickets go on sale today, there's a forecast for a high temperature above 35 degrees next week, and thousands of indie rock kids around Chicago will soon be shedding their parkas for high-priced hoodies bought from Wicker Park boutiques (tip: ours cost us $12 at Target!) for several worthwhile shows around the Chicago area. Lots of tickets go on sale this weekend. So, despite this crappy weather, there is, in the words of Spoon, "something to look forward to."

When Mission Of Burma reunited for a few shows a couple years ago we thought it was nice the old men were getting back together and getting some of the attention they certainly deserved. When we heard the reunion was going to be more or less permanent, we sort of prayed they wouldn't record a new album. They did anyway, and while we enjoyed it, we ultimately thought, "meh." Then they went ahead and recorded 2006's The Obliterati, producing an album that is arguably the best of their entire career.

First off, we regret to announce that Favourite Sons have pulled out of their show at The Empty Bottle tonight. Bummer, huh? Here's the official word as to why: Favourite Sons have to cancel their upcoming shows. The band is extremely disappointed to have to do so, but singer Ken Griffith has fallen ill and simply cannot continue on until this clears up - even singing has become painful due to his upper respiratory situation....

This weekend is really just too jam-packed with music we want to check out. We mean, WAY too jam-packed. We’ve already mentioned Veruca Salt tonight, but that’s sort of a high-profile show that most folks probably already know about. There are a couple bands coming through town this weekend that you’ve a) probably never heard of and b) are well worth your time.

We’re not going to waste your time telling you just how terrific Dressy Bessy is. In our book a cute girl plus sunny melodies plus tight-as-an-L.A.-forehead songs equal aural bliss divided by an ear to ear smile. The fact Dressy Bessy is simply playing would be enough for us to urge you to get yer butts on over to The Abbey this Sunday. No, instead we want to tell you about an undiscovered gem currently touring with Ms. Bessy (yes, we know “no one is Pink” in the band, we’re doing it because we’re feeling frisky today).

Local rock critic Jim DeRogatis has spent the last few years pestering members of the Flaming Lips for interviews, haranguing them in the studio while they tried to get work done, bugging singer Wayne Coyne’s significant other for photos of the band and digging through years and years of smudged newsprint mining old interviews with and profiles of the band. This is just a long-winded way for us to say that DeRo has gone and...

Within fifteen minutes of talking to any Oak Parker, you're guaranteed to hear the phrase, "Oak Park isn't like most places." But one month from today, Oak Park will take a shaky step towards the mainstream by opening its first establishment to serve primarily alcoholic drinks, The Abbey at 728 Lake St. Until now, only restaurants that served food could serve alcohol.

The Euro 2004 soccer tournament kicks off this weekend in Portugal. Watching the matches can be tricky because soccer doesn't get the TV coverage in the U.S. that football, baseball or bass fishing get. But never fear, because Chicagoist knows this is a city that loves its beer and its sports and thus provides a handy list of bars and pubs around town will be televising the matches.
