Rockin' Our Turntable: Super Furry Animals

The first time we heard Super Furry Animals, just about a decade ago, we remember thinking "what the hell are these guys on?!" before falling under the intoxicating and influential haze of their abrasive psychedelic dance-rock and begging to "take whatever the hell those guys are on!"

MGMT comes to us via Brooklyn but heavily under the influence of electronic psychedelics and British pop. The duo of Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser create a sound that's a thumping, bumping mixture of call and response synths and rumbling bass tones owing much to latter day Flaming Lips and Super Furry Animals. (At times the resemblance between MGMT's debut and Gruff Rhys' forthcoming side-project Neon Neon are striking.)

We love Blur. And Super Furry Animals. And Happy Mondays, Pulp, and Supergrass. So it's not surprising that we enjoy Chicago-by-way-of-the-'burbs outfit Ultra Sonic Edukators. The group's writing style is firmly rooted in the mid-'90s British explosion; some fault them for that, but we are of the opinion that the world would be better off if more bands took their cues from that point in time.

We alluded to it earlier, but this is one hell of a weekend for music in our fair city. One of the upswings of the indiefication of America has been the steadily improving street festival bills, so we can at least enjoy good tunes with our processed meats and flat beer, and this weekend sees two of the best line-ups all summer unfortunately going head to head with each other.
