Kanye + Spike Jonze = WTF?

What happens when Kanye teams up with music video genius/movie director Spike Jonze? One hot, intriguing mess, that's what. Our pals at Pitchfork point us to the short film We Were Once A Fairytale, a little slice of...something that features, "Kanye acting completely drunk and making an utter ass out of himself at a club before having sex with a ghost and then ripping the world's cutest goblin out of his stomach." Also, he bleeds and vomits confetti. Hell, this might be a documentary for all we know. Judge for yourself by watching it here. Where the wild things are, indeed.

REVIEW: Where The Wild Things Are

Maurice Sendak first picked Spike Jonze to direct Where The Wild Things Are after seeing Being John Malkovich, a movie Jonze directed a decade ago. Needless to say, the process it’s taken to transform Sendak’s beloved childrens book into a live action feature film has been long and tiring. And that’s just for the fans. We’ve threatened to eat our parents because of it. But, the wait will soon be over, and for Chicagoist, it already is.

Where The Wild Things Are? The Music Box

We've mentioned the upcoming film adaptation of the famous childrens book Where The Wild Things Are before. Maybe it's because we're a little skeptical of how writer Dave Eggers and director Spike Jonze will transform a 40-something page book (that's not a whole lot of substance, though we love it dearly) into a 90-plus minute movie. Or maybe it's because we do love the book so much and we're also fans of both Eggers and Jonze and are anxious to see if they worked their magic on this.

Will Smith has already said he'd play him onscreen, but first we have to get through the convention in August, an event that has its own series of rituals and traditions. One of the most high-profile of these is the biographical promo, a short film designed to introduce the nominee. Past efforts have invloved the likes of Harry Thomason (for Bill Clinton) and James Moll and Steven Spielberg (for John Kerry). Al Gore's 2000 promo was to have been directed by Spike Jonze but was eventually scuttled (it was later released on Wholphin's first issue).

On Tuesday, we told you about ResFest at the Museum of Contemporary Art and all the video goodness therein, including the Beck retrospective. But if our sparkling descriptions weren’t enough to motivate you to attend, would free tickets make it worth your while? Then you’re in luck because we’ve got a pair of tickets to see the Beck oeuvre in all its quirky, funky glory and we’re giving them to one of you.

New York's finest (that's Sonic Youth, not the NYPD) make a stop in town tonight at the Vic. As anyone who went to their performance at the Goose Island Fest last summer knows, these guys (plus Kim Gordon, one of rock's sexiest goddesses) have still got it. Ever since adding Chicagoan/ Wilco producer/ musician extraordinaire Jim O’Rourke as the fifth man to their line-up, the group has seen remarkable restraint with noise and a welcome rediscovery of melody. Their latest release, Sonic Nurse, is one of the best records of the year and one of the strongest in the group's storied career. Also check out their recently released collection of videos, Corporate Ghost, including work by Spike Jonze, Todd Haynes, and a pair of videos in Pixelvision. Fuck yeah.
