The last three jurors and six alternates were selected in the trial of a man charged with the rape and murder of 11 South Side women in the 90s on Friday at the Criminal Courts Building, according to Chicago Breaking News.

In a haunting story detailing the backlog of DNA evidence overwhelming the Chicago Police Department, the Tribune reports police had DNA evidence to arrest an alleged serial rapist a year before he was finally apprehended.

A man accused of two rapes in the Bucktown neighborhood has been arrested. Damario McNeil, 31, of Lawndale, was arrested and charged with one count of attempt first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated criminal assault and two counts of aggravated kidnapping and one count of armed robbery. The first rape occurred in February in the 2300 block of W. Moffat, very close to the Western/Milwaukee Blue Line stop. The second assault happened just a few weeks ago, a bit further from the same Blue Line stop but still in the vicinity, in the 2000 block of W. Charleston. Police think McNeil could be linked to at least two other assaults, another in February close to the Western/Milwaukee Blue Line stop and one last September close to the Damen/North Blue Line stop. • The family of Aquan Lewis is asking for a second autopsy to be performed, disputing what they call a "startling" and quick decision by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office that ruled Aquan's death a suicide.
• Police continue to investigate the rape of a woman that occurred early Monday morning in the Bucktown neighborhood - 2300 block of W. Moffat - just south of the Western (Milwaukee) Blue Line stop.

Two men were sentenced to two years probation today for raping a 14-year-old girl. Tony Pacheco (left), 17 at the time of the 2006 crime, and Angel Alverio (right), then 18, pleaded guilty yesterday to one count each of aggravated battery and criminal sexual abuse. The were sentenced to 24 months probation and both have to register as sex offenders for 10 years.

Beginning in 2009, the federal government will require all states to purchase and provide anonymous rape exams if they wish to continue receiving funds under the Violence Against Women Act, which provides money for women's shelters and law enforcement training. The exams allow for the collection of evidence (skin, hair, blood, saliva or semen) from rape victims, but identify the victims only by a serial number, maintaining anonymity. The exams are sealed, preserving the evidence, and are only opened if the victim decides to press charges.

Former Chicago Police sergeant John Herman faces a minimum of 24 years in prison after he was convicted of rape this week. Herman had a bench trial rather than a jury trial, and Judge Joseph Claps not only found Herman guilty, he also had some additional harsh words for the rapist. Timothy Krajcir, a currently incarcerated repeat violent sex offender, pleaded guilty yesterday to killing Deborah Sheppard, an SIU student who was murdered in 1982. And then he confessed to eight other murders in Missouri and another area police haven't disclosed yet (possibly Kentucky). The Chicago Police Department showed a drop in the number of solved murders in the city in 2006. Down to 36% from 42% in 2005, the department attributes the drop to new guidelines that detectives must follow, which include taping interrogations and letting a witness know that they are free to leave.
