First of all, let's get this out of the way. We were watching the little video with Perry Farrell below and were thinking he's looking remarkably well preserved for a dude who is 50. Then we thought, "Wait, Perry Farrell is FIFTY?!" We've always though Bowie was well preserved but Farrell is giving that man a run for his money.

Sunday Sweaty Sunday. The weather was somewhere between Friday's scorcher and Saturday's gorgeousness. We had our sunscreen applied, water packed, our beach towels ready, and were prepared for whatever Day 3 had to bring us. Lots of questions floated around the grounds, including the still-rumored Obama appearance. What some folks failed to realize was that said rumor was actually listed in the program making it feel manufactured for dubious promotional purposes more than anything else. With that in mind, we took advantage of a wide-open schedule to catch as many bands as we could amongst the (once again) sell out crowd.

To background, I manage a Chicago band called Tom Schraeder & His Ego, which landed a coveted spot on the 2007 bill. Though our slot was early (12:30 p.m. on Friday), the work for artists doesn’t stop once they’ve loaded up their vans (or in our case, the hearse) and exited the festival grounds. To give our esteemed Chicagoist readers a quick sketch of life deep on the Lollapalooza undercard, I kept a scribbled-note journal...

White Rabbits are doing something right, because the Brooklyn sextet has gone from a band we checked out at SXSW because they are friends with a friend of ours to one of the buzziest bands in the blogosphere. No surprise, really – these kids can bring the good times rocknroll, and an 8.1 album rating from Pitchfork didn’t hurt either.

Kids can get their rock on at the Paul Frank Store (851 W Armitage Ave.) from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. today. Lollapalooza's own Kidzapapalooza is having an in-store party to celebrate the announcement of the Kidzapalooza line-up. We think it's pretty nifty that Perry Farrell's now-stationary multicolored party is doing its best to make sure everyone of very age is invited, and last year the Kidzapalooza stage was the hippest kids party we've ever seen.

It’s time to prove that Chicago has the best bands to fill those two early slots at Lollapalooza. Sure, playing at 11:00 a.m. isn’t the most rocking of hours, but it is a great way to have your sound heard by the masses and earn a few converts. Submit songs in mp3 format and then work those MySpace friends, email lists, and phone trees to get people loving your songs and voting online.

With the recent news that Intonation Music Festival will not be held this year, there’s been speculation of what exactly David Singer and company will be doing to bide their time. When we spoke with the Intonation crew last year, they emphasized that what made their festival different than the influx of outdoor festivals in the Chicago area was the diversity of the lineup, combined with the fact their festival happened before the Chicago summer...

The Ravinia Festival summer schedule has been released, a consolation prize for those of us who couldn’t score cheap Lollapalooza passes. Online ticket sales begin April 19 and won’t require multiple browser windows and copious amounts of prayer. True to form, the 2007 schedule offers much to satisfy the 45-55 year old demographic: the Beach Boys, Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller, and that ABBA tribute band return. Programmers share Perry Farrell’s fondness for the 90s, booking...

It’s funny how the granddaddy of “weirdo-festivals” is now, for all intents and purposes, a secured bastion of the establishment. We still remember the very first Lollapalooza and the feeling that “we” were on the verge of winning the cultural war through music. We were, unfortunately, correct, and we’ve been paying for it ever since as Madison Avenue keeps packaging and re-packaging that which we hold dear in order to sell us an edgy new...

As if 130 bands, overpriced food, kids’ shows, an art exhibit, and people watching weren’t enough, Lollapalooza 2006 will serve up afternoons of interactive entertainment on the Mindfield Stage. Good to see three local comedy offerings on the bill but, with all due respect, they’re pretty much the opening act everyone’s sitting through to get to the headliner. To any of our readers coughing up $60 or more just to see Chicago comedy in Grant...

Yesterday Chicagoist heard that Perry Farrell would be announcing more bands to the Lollapalooza line-up while delivering a big check to Parkways. We went down to Washington Park to be present for this press conference mainly because we wanted to get the names of those new bands out there faster than anyone else, but no such announcement was made. We did, however, learn a great deal about how the "cutting edge" Lollapalooza audience is allowing the Chicago Park District to go forward with improvements that wouldn't have been realized without our hard-earned music dollar fees.

Chicagoist has been told our entire lives that time is money, and today we learn that the price of procrastination is $10. In order to get Lollapalooza three-day passes at $130, we have to act now. Perry Farrell is announcing more acts tomorrow morning, and after that...all bets are off, and we have to shell out the bigger bucks.

Just when the darkness of winter is getting to be too much - it's Valentine's Day! Something there to remind us how dark our days really are, but today, of all days, the City gives us the present we've been dreaming of - Lollapalooza. This year our present will last 3 days from August 4th-6th, have 130 performers on eight stages and take up more space in Grant Park. No one act is signed...

This year’s Double Door Halloween show seemed a little bit weirder than previous incarnations. It could’ve been because Chicagoist decided to stay stone cold sober to really see what the show was really like, or it could’ve been the girl in the stall of the men’s room exhorting her date to “Stick your finger all the way to the back of your throat and just get it all out.” Irregardless we had a great time.

In contrast to the lack of coverage in the run-up to Intonation, Lollapalooza sees to be everywhere. Chicago Innerview devoted half of their monthly issue to it, the Red Eye (a co-sponsor of the fest) is running a five-day countdown with capsule summaries of every band along with interviews, rock critics Jim Derogatis and Greg Kot have both weighed in and even if you’re not going, you probably have a mild interest in the...

Chicagoist cancelled its subscription to Jane Magazine a few months back after an article on How To Date Eight Guys At Once left us with nothing more than a weird rash. Maybe if we kept it then we’d be the ones with the early lowdown on the lineup for Lollapolooza and not Jim DeRogatis. The lengths that man will go to scoop the rest of the press!

Gaper’s Block alerted us to some big music festival news: Lollapalooza will return this summer. Bad news? It’s only playing one city. Good news? The city is Chicago. Nice. Marc Geiger, one of the founders of the original Lollapalooza, will help bring Lollapalooza to Chicago from July 23rd to 24th. Perry Farrell is also involved in a “creative capacity.” Though the new Lolla website goes live on Friday, the festival lineup won’t be announced mid-April....
