The Friday Buffet: Thanksgiving Edition

We've been remiss with filing the Buffet the past two weeks and, with Thanksgiving right around the corner, we thought we'd instead list this week local restaurants offering Thanksgiving dinners, either to dine in or to go. This one's for those of you who think you have no cooking skills or simply don't want to put forth the effort in the kitchen.

Publican Hosts James Beard Foundation Benefit Dinner

On Sunday, October 18, the chefs of Blackbird, avec and The Publican along with Pamela Fitzpatrick of Fox & Obel are hosting a five-course benefit dinner supporting James Beard Foundation. Chefs of the night will be Becky Broeske, Koren Grieveson, Brian Huston, Paul Kahan and Mike Sheerin. Pairings will feature Champagne Henriot, Napa Valley’s Blackbird Vineyards, Goose Island Beer Company and Three Floyds Brewing Co. If you must only choose one big dining event of the fall, this might be it. Hors d’oeuvres include: oysters, smoked black cod, and crispy pork rinds paired with champagne.   • Today is the final day of the annual Berghoff Oktoberfest in Federal Plaza. You've been warned.
  • Tomorrow: Drinks Over Dearborn is hosting a free bourbon tasting from noon-3 p.m. While you're there, buy some of what you've sampled ans SAVE D.O.D. Kyle McHugh stocks some amazing product. (650 N. Dearborn, 312-337-9463)
  • Tomorrow: Wicker Park Lutheran Church is hosting its fifth annual "World's Largest Potluck" from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will go to help restore the 103-year-old landmark. (2112 W. LeMoyne)

  • Get out and enjoy Province's new outdoor patio. It opens today. (161 N. Jefferson)
  • According to Time Out Chicago, Nightwood opens for brunch Sunday from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Now we'll get to see if the lines run Lula-long.
  • No Sleep 'til Bridgeport. St. Jerome Croatian Church's 103rd annual Velika Gospa gets underway at 10:15 a.m.. Lots of cevap, oysters, hearty Italian fare and sweets to be had here. (28th and Princeton). That'll be followed by the procession of St. Rocco di Simbario on Sunday

  • Through Sunday: Pilsen's annual Fiesta Del Sol festival kicked off last night on Cermak from Morgan to Throop. Very good eats to be had at Fiesta del Sol.
  • One of the highlights of this year's Retro on Roscoe Festival is the 15th Annual Windy City Chili Cook Off. The cookoff is open to anyone over 18. No beans allowed.
  • Flemings Prime Steakhouse (25 E. Ohio, 312-329-9463) is offering that burger above as part of its "5 for $6 Until 7" menu. that's eight ounces of hand-shaped ground Prime beef, seasoned with salt and pepper, pan-seared and finished in flemings' broiler.

For those of us whose weekend won't revolve around NRA Show 2009, here are some events for you to consider:

  • Saturday: A final reminder about Alice Waters's Green City Market appearance tomorrow. She'll be there selling and signing copies of her book Edible Schoolyard.
  • Tonight: Yoga and beer: two of our favorite things. Stellaria Natural Health (2519 N. California, 2nd floor) and Provenance Food & Wine are teaming up for an event combining a yoga lesson and a tasting of organic beers, from 7-9 p.m. $30 per person.
  • Saturday: Sippin' Saturdays at Randolph Wine Cellars tasting room will focus on fortified European wines. This free event runs from 2-6 p.m.
