Rockin' Our Turntable: Kid Sister

Our first clue that Kid Sister -- Melisa Young-- was on the road to fame is when she apologized to a friend of ours while telling him she wouldn't be able to babysit his kids any longer due to her hectic travel schedule. This also offers some insight into what it is that sets her apart from so many other hip-hop-popsters; even while shooting videos with Kanye West she was picking up work on the side babysitting for friends. It's that combination of a solid work ethic and her lack of pretension that makes her debut, Ultraviolet, such a satisfying listen.

Surprise! Kid Sister's Debut Delayed

Ultraviolet, Kid Sister's years-in-the-making debut was finally supposed to drop October 6. Now we hear from her publicist that it's not arriving until November 17. We love Kid Sister, but we're beginning to think there's a good chance Marcus will actually catch a unicorn before the album finally gets released.

We're pleased to see Kid Sister has been taking care of herself and getting fit lately, but we're even happier to hear she's buckling down to finally deliver that debut album that's been delayed about a thousand times already.

Kid Sister's Chinese Democracy?

Looks like we're not the only one growing impatient for Kid Sister's constantly delayed debut Dream Date. Cream Team has jumped into the act with a particularly right on analog blog about the release date that keeps retreating into the horizon.

We know we recently told you the looooong awaited debut from Kid Sister, Dream Date, was pushed back to a January release ... but we've just learned that it's actually been pushed further back to March as she works on some additional tracks for the album. On the bright side, we had been grousing around the office that a winter release might dampen the album's summer hopes, but at this rate it may just be the summer jam of '09!

Tomorrow's show at Metro with Kid Sister, Flosstradamus, and The Hood Internet should provide a cap on a pretty wild year for all three groups. High profile gigs and buzz have followed this crew internationally and the anticipation for both Kid Sister and Flosstradamus' debuts has steadily built to nigh ridiculous levels. This bill is basically constrcuted from the kings and queen's of Chicago's feel-good party scene, so we expect Metro to be a madhouse. The fact that it's happening on Blackout Wednesday (which precedes Black Friday every year) should only add to the chaos.

Kid Sister's hotly anticipated debut, Dream Date, has been pushed back to a January 27, 2009 release date. We're beginning to worry this album is destined to become the Chicago hip-hop version of Chinese Democracy...

Sunday Sweaty Sunday. The weather was somewhere between Friday's scorcher and Saturday's gorgeousness. We had our sunscreen applied, water packed, our beach towels ready, and were prepared for whatever Day 3 had to bring us. Lots of questions floated around the grounds, including the still-rumored Obama appearance. What some folks failed to realize was that said rumor was actually listed in the program making it feel manufactured for dubious promotional purposes more than anything else. With that in mind, we took advantage of a wide-open schedule to catch as many bands as we could amongst the (once again) sell out crowd.

Rock The Bells, a "world-class hip hop platform" that kicks off its 2008 tour right here in Chicago on July 19th, announced their main lineup yesterday, which includes local acts The Cool Kids, Kid Sister, and Kidz in the Hall. Ironically, The Cool Kids and Kid Sister (both playing Coachella this weekend) aren't listed on the Chicago itinerary, though they are listed for subsequent shows. We don't know if it's an oversight or not, but here's hoping they're added for the hometown gig. (Ed. note: They might be excluded due to the blackout around the Lollapalooza dates.) Even without the local acts, the lineup is pretty solid already, with hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, and De La Soul (returning a year after their triumphant Pitchfork set) leading the charge along with one of our personal favorites, Mos Def, and a few Wu Tang members thrown in for good measure. Additional acts will be announced in the near future.

DeRo has the lowdown on a bunch of other confirmed Lollapalooza acts. We already knew Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and Rage Against The machine would be headlining, but now you can add Racontuers, Kanye West, and Wilco to that list. We'd bitch about the fact that three of the six headliners have already played Lolla, which in its current incarnation is still a neophyte, but fuck it, we love all the headliners so we'll keep our trap shut.

In our heads the weekend has already landed. Local heroes Flosstradamus have gone global and put together a little mix for the Bang Gang promoters down under. If you haven't had a chance to check out the duo's out of control Chicago parties, this is a nice little 30-minute sample of what the boys are capable. And, of course, it includes the obligatory Kid Sister appearance near the end of the mix. [credz]

Jim DeRogatis provides an obligatory "Chicago's next big bands" list today, and we actually find ourselves agreeing with most of his picks, even if a few are overly obvious. For instance it's not exactly like he's mining the underground when he predicts Kid Sister and the Cool Kids are going to break in 2008. We were pleasantly surprised to see Airiel and Tom Schraeder on his list, though, since those are two acts that we believe have been passing under the radar, and both are primed to grab a larger audience this year. Schraeder in particular has been riding a swelling wave of good press and larger live audiences.

Love him or hate him, you can't deny Kanye West has a certain flare. Proving himself to a more prolific blogger than Steve Johnson (and more entertaining, too), Kanye has dropped a few details about an upcoming tour. He'll be touring with fellow Chicago MC Lupe Fiasco, supporting his recently released (and excellent record The Cool), along with Rihanna, and Neptunes side project N.E.R.D. Whatever you think of Mr. West, that lineup is nothing to sneeze at. We also dig that Star Wars/Max Headroom promo poster you can see over to the right.

Discobelle pointed us towards Shala Esquire’s Immortal Movement Radio podcast. It's got some of the Chicago area's hottest hip-hop and dance talent including: Cool Kids, Hollywood Holt, Kid Sister, Qualo, Mic Terror, and even The Jai Alai Savant.

So this dude's babysitter just put out a video featuring Kanye West. Check it out.

Chicago's DJ collective, Flosstradamus, featuring DJs Josh Young (a.k.a. J2K) and Curt Cameruci (a.k.a. Autobot), and Melissa Young (a.k.a. club rapper Kid Sister and actual sibling of J2K), grace URB's April 2007 issue, "The Next 1000." These eclectic artists blend electronic and hip-hop beats, while sampling lyrics spanning several genres from crunk to punk. Flosstradamus thrills hipsters and hip-hop heads alike with their unique blend of genre-hopping. The duo employs a three-turntable set up with...
