CLTV's Host Parents Killed, Car Found

Horrific news this morning in connection with a pair of bodies found Monday afternoon in a county forest preserve. The bodies were identified as Milton and Ruby McClendon, parents of CLTV host Garrard McClendon. According to the Tribune:

Hey, remember when you guys were making fun of the big Statue of Liberty replica that the city of Hammond, Indiana wanted to stick in the middle of Wolf Lake? Guess what, snobs, that 50,000 pound piece of foam just might make its way to Chicago if we win the bid to host the Olympic Games in 2016.

Apparently, Northwest Indiana has a thing for replicas of the Statue of Liberty. Community activist Jim Nowacki is leading the charge in Gary to raise funds to repair an eight-foot-tall copper replica of Lady Liberty that was damaged during a storm last year. The statue - one of 200 that were distributed at different sites around the country in the 1950s courtesy of the Boy Scouts - used to stand at the entrance to U.S. Steel and repairs will cost between $8,000 and $10,000. Lest we forget, Hammond has its own Statue of Liberty replica, but nowhere to put it after a structural engineer told the city the foam replica was not structurally sound enough to survive the windy Wolf Lake location. Many people in the area know A Christmas Story was originally based on author Jean Shephard's experience of growing up in Hammond. Sadly, it appears a one Hammond fourth-grader hasn't seen the movie or just didn't heed its warning. He should have known better than to try to lick a pole in this kind of weather, but he did anyway. In the end, he was fine except for his bleeding tongue.

Break out the pink bunny suits and leggy lamps! The classic holiday movie A Christmas Story turns 25 this year, and the film's home turf of Hammond is celebrating like gangbusters. The movie, based on a short story by Hammond native Jean Shepherd, centers on the author's hometown holiday experience in fictional Hohman, Indiana, a name chosen as a nod to one of Hammond's main downtown streets.

The not-quite full-size foam replica of the Statue of Liberty won't be going up in Hammond after all. The statue was to go up in Wolf Lake but a structural engineer has told officials it's just not feasible.

Engineer Don Corson told the Hammond Redevelopment Commission that wind and ultraviolet light would damage the 130-foot, 50,000-pound resin-covered statue and it would require extensive renovation for an outdoor display.
That's too bad for Hammond, but if you're still hurting to see a replica of Lady Liberty, head down to Birmingham, Alabama. The best part about their replica? The torch uses real fire.

Now that Early Voting Season has come to a close in Illinois, they've counted up the ballots, and a metric shitload of people turned out to make their mark. (Just the ballots have been counted - the actual votes won't be counted 'til election day.) ABC-7 reports that nearly half a million in Indiana, another half-million voters in Cook County, and about 285,000 in the collar counties all voted early, resulting in lines that had wait times of two hours in some cases. And we thought our ten minute wait was surprising a few weeks ago.

Jose Antonio Mendoza, 28, of Hammond, Indiana has been charged with murder in connection to the death of his girlfriend's 17-month-old daughter, Savannah Fullgraf.

The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled her death was from multiple injuries due to child abuse. Doctors at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital in Hammond reported she had extensive bruises, as well as burns and broken bones.

The City of Hammond will pay an engineering firm $27,500 to figure out whether an almost full-size, resin-covered foam replica of the Statue of Liberty is fit to make its new home on an island in Wolf Lake.
