Won't Let Go

Weekend Jams: Grammar, REGO, and Gin Blossoms

It's a short week so we're already focusing on the weekend. And, for us, the weekend starts tomorrow. Sure, you're likely to catch us at the Bloodshot Beer-B-Q, but there's plenty of other music to catch this weekend, including some great local bands and a nostalgia act we're still suckers for after all of these years.

O.K., this isn't technically a Grammar video, the band just graciously donated one of their songs to provide the soundtrack too this student made video for Nortthwesternn'sShift program. If you look closely, you may just see a certain Chicagoist music writer frolicking in this video.

Tomorrow Is Chicagoist's 5th Birthday Bash!

We can't believe it's already here, but TOMORROW is our anniversary party at The Whistler! Grammar and The Interiors have been putting in long hours at the practice space to kick out some outstanding musical sets, and Chicagoist DJs Pocket Taco, SuperBird, and Tankboy have been diligently working at holding one headphone over their ears while simultaneously bobbing their heads. Prepare yourself for terrific music all night long.

Psst! Over Here! Secret Saturday Plans!

Alright, folks, I have to make this quick before my editors get back from their coffee run. Here's the deal: By now you probably know about our fifth anniversary party this Saturday night at The Whistler. I want to tell you about a great concert going on that night, but if my editors find out I plugged something other than our party, they'll make Gitmo look like a Mancow stunt. They are not fucking around on this one.

One more week! That's all the time left before our AMAZING anniversary party at The Whistler on Saturday, May 30! We've got terrific bands lined up -- Grammar and The Interiors and a surprise musical guest -- and a few Chicagoist DJs -- Pocket Taco, SuperBird, and Tankboy -- to keep your ears happy.

Five Wondrous And Glorious Years

We just wanted to remind you to keep May 30 open on your calendar so you can join us at The Whistler and celebrate Chicagoist's fifth birthday party. We're bringing in some of our favorite bands -- Grammar and The Interiors (plus a surprise musical guest) -- to light up The Whistler's stage and a few of your Chicagoist DJs will keep the soundtrack going in to the night.

Save The Date, We're Almost Five!

Yeah, can you believe it? This month marks Chicagoist's fifth year of keeping you abreast of the happenings in Chicago. In blog years that makes us, what? Ten? Fifteen?

Pencil This In

Nothing cures a bad case of Valentine's Day candy bloat like rock bands and scholarly get-togethers, which is what we've got for you today:

The following ten groups released albums or EPs that we believe launched them far above the roiling masses making up the Chicago music scene. While these are our favorites it should be noted that this was an amazingly strong year for the local scene, and we could have easily made a top 50 list without much of a problem. In fact, just reviewing the bands while making this list we realized how thankful we are to be located in such a musically fertile city!

Chicago has proven itself as a relatively fertile breeding ground for a number of orch-pop leaning combos. Grammar is one of the newer additions to the city's pop canon, but if their new EP and recent live shows are any indication they have the potential to grow into kings (and queen) of that particular scene.

Takka Takka's new album Migration features guest performances by members of The National and Clap Your hands Say Yeah, is produced by Sean Greenhalgh of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and it was recorded in Brooklyn. Those three facts alone would be enough for a reactionary critic to torpedo the band under the assumption that the result would be so infused with smug inidieness as to make it near unlistenable for anyone not wearing a string headband.
