Will It Be An Af-Rose?

So far this young season, Bulls budding superstar Derrick Rose hasn't played up to the level many expect. His play has been more tentative, he's committing more turnovers and his shooting percentage has dropped. While's he is still recovering from an ankle injury that caused him to miss most of the preseason, and the loss of Ben Gordon allows opposing teams to tighten up their defense, Rose is perhaps his harshest critic when it comes to his play. And he's vowed to do something about it.

We're fans of athletes who don't take themselves too seriously and the young Chicago Bulls prove themselves worthy of that adoration. Seriously, do you think Vince Carter would ever do something like this? [h/t NQTC, via Windy Citizen]

There are no box scores to link to today as none of Chicago's teams were in action last night. However, there's plenty of sports news to go around.

Is this the year the Bulls finally reclaim their place among the NBA's elite? For the past few seasons, the Bulls have been full of potential but inconsistent on fulfilling that promise on the court. One of these years, they'll finally make that jump. When we last saw the Bulls playing meaningful games, it was in an epic seven-game series (plus seven OT periods) with the Boston Celtics in the opening round of the playoffs. Taking the defending NBA champs and second-seeded Celts the full distance gave Bulls fans a lot to look forward to for this season. But is the optimism justified just yet?

Bulls Make A Few Small Moves

With the season opener just days away now, the Chicago Bulls are making a few small maneuvers to get all their ducks in a row before they tip off Thursday night. The Tribune reports that the team has named Kirk Hinrich, Luol Deng and Lindsey Hunter as team captains for the 2009-2010 season. Also, in a move that surprises no one, the team picked up the options on contracts for Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, ensuring that the pair will be under contract through the 2010-2011 season. Speaking of Rose, it looks like he'll get some playing time during Thursday night's opener, but don't expect much from him in the first few weeks as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

We shared photos from the Bulls' practice session yesterday and today we've got a few more shots of the Bulls having fun in London ahead of today's match-up with the Utah Jazz. Bulls star Derrick Rose joined Jazz players Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko (and friends) at this weekend's Chelsea-Liverpool Premiership game. For those interested, the game tips off at 1:30 p.m. Chicago time; it's only being carried on NBA TV but you can follow the action online at NBA.com.

Rose Scandal To Cost Memphis Wins

Reports indicate that on Thursday, the NCAA will strip the University of Memphis of its wins from the 2007-08 following an investigation into violations by the program. Those violations include accusations that Bulls point guard Derrick Rose had somebody else take his SAT exam and that family of the Chicago hoops phenom received other illegal benefits such as free travel.

Derrick Rose Thanks Fans For Support

A year ago, Derrick Rose was the center of the basketball world's attention as he was picked first overall in the NBA Draft. In his rookie season, he lived up to the hype, winning the rookie of the year award and ingratiating himself to fans in Chicago. Rose has had a bit of a rocky ride since the season ended, however. First there was the photo of him flashing a gang sign, and then the allegations he cheated on his SATs in order to get into the University of Memphis.

Rose Reacts To Gang Sign Controversy

Yesterday, we posted the picture of Derrick Rose that's been circulating among smaller sports blog - such as Da Bullz and Black Sports Online - for a week now and that the Tribune picked up on. The photo shows Rose and former Memphis teammate Antonia Anderson flashing gang signs; we're no experts but it's alleged that Rose is flashing the pitchfork signs usually associated with Gangster Disciples Nation. As the controversy has grown, Rose finally addressed the situation via a statement (via the Tribune):

Gang Sign Controversy For Derrick Rose

Chicago Bulls player - and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year - finds himself in a new controversy over a photo (above) that allegedly shows Rose flashing gang signs. The photo's been circulating over the last week on several sports blogs and today the Tribune takes up the issue.

Extra, Extra

Allegations Arise Over Rose, SAT Cheating

Derrick Rose returned to town last fall with high expectations, as both the top overall draft pick in the NBA draft and a local boy made good. On the court for the Bulls, he lived up to everybody's high hopes -- winning himself the Rookie of the Year award while comporting himself with a humbleness rare in athletes of his stature and at his age. But a possible chink has been discovered in his armor.

Sure, it's an Adidas ad, but there's a lot to love about this tribute to our rookie of the year, which doesn't surprise us as it's a collaboration with awesome basketball blog Free Darko.

...would NOT smell as sweet. Rookie-of-the-Year Derrick Rose made an appearance at the adidas Sport Performance Store in Water Tower Place on Saturday to thank his fans and sign some schwag. Rose first addressed a large crowd in front of the entrance, expressing his gratitude for their support this season. After the thank-yous and a brief ceremony in which Rose dedicate a signed jersey to the store, Derrick made his way to a table in the back and hunkered down for two hours of signing autographs. In order to get the star's signature fans first had to obtain a wristband, which were distributed earlier in the day on a first-come, first-serve basis. The initial wristband was awarded shortly after the doors opened at 10 a.m., and by 12:30 p.m. all 200 had been distributed.

Morning Box Score: Bulls Blown Out At Home

After their surprising game one victory and close loss in game two coming on a buzzer beater, the Bulls looked up to the task of challenging the defending NBA champs in their best-of-seven series as it moved back to Chicago. With their rabid fans all dressed in red to give them the added boost, surely the Bulls could regain the series lead against the Boston Celtics, right?

Rose is NBA's Top Rookie

Some great - if not sorta unsurprising - news for Bulls fans as the team will announce at a 2 p.m. press conference today that rookie sensation Derrick Rose is the NBA's 2008-2009 Rookie of the Year. Rose started 80 of the Bulls 82 games, averaging 37 minutes per game. For the season, he averaged 16.8 points a game (second amongst rookies), 6.3 assists a game (first amongst rookies), and 3.9 rebounds a game. Rose provided a much-needed energy for the Bulls and showed an immediate impact, no only helping them back to the postseason, but also so far in the postseason, where his 36 point performance in game one against the Celtics propelled the Bulls to an upset win. Rose is the third Bull to win the award, after Elton Brand and His Royal Airness. But there won't be much time to celebrate as the Bulls host the Celtics in a pivotal game three of their first-round playoff series tomorrow night. [Tribune, ESPN]

Bulls Steal Game 1 From Celtics

Playing in Boston against a team with a much better record, the Bulls were given little chance of winning their playoff opener -- even if the Celtics were playing without Kevin Garnett. But the Bulls surprised many when they upset the defending NBA champs 105-103 in overtime Saturday afternoon, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the series and stealing home court advantage away in the best-of-seven series.

Morning Box Score

Paced by rookie Derrick Rose's team-high 21 points, the Bulls had no problem beating the Chris Paul-less New Orleans Hornets, 107-93. Six players scored in double-figures for the Bulls, who took a comfy 62-44 lead to halftime. It was the Bulls' fourth win in five games but even with the win, the Bulls are still at six games under .500 and a game back of the last playoff spot. Said Rose, "We were just running, playing an up-tempo type game, pushing it, playing defense. We need to do that more often.'' The Bulls are 4-2 on their current road trip and end it with a game in Dallas Saturday night.

Just what the hell was rookie sensation Derrick Rose doing handling a sharp object anyway??? The star apparently sliced his finger and required 10 stitches, causing him to miss practice, but he's expected back in time for tomorrow night's game against the Knicks. Did Bulls' management learn nothing from other examples? You wrap your star rookie in bubblewrap and make sure you buy him this and these. Yeesh.

After a sluggish start - to say the least - on their annual Circus Trip, the Bulls finally broke through with a win, edging the Golden State Warriors 115-110. Larry Hughes led the Bulls with 26 points, Derrick Rose added 25, and Drew Gooden put in 18 with 16 rebounds. Before the game, the Bulls had started the season 0-5 on the road. Rose expressed relief at snapping the streak: "We really needed this one. We thought we could come in here and compete against them, and that's what we did. I had to shoot, and that's what I did. I stopped thinking about what I did and reacted to it.'' Next up for the Bulls are back-to-back games tomorrow night (Denver) and Monday (Utah).

Tigers, elephants and clowns [Ed.'s Note: God, I hate clowns. - M.G.] are filing into the United Center, which means only one thing for Bulls and Blackhawks fans -- the dreaded "circus trip." Each November, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus exiles the Bulls and Blackhawks from their home for an extended road trip. For the Bulls, the trip usually wreaks havoc with the young team's record and psyche -- since MJ left town, the Bulls are a cumulative 6-52. This year's squad, led by rookie Derrick Rose on the court and a rookie coach on the sideline, is off to a surprising 5-5 start. Will that give them the confidence to hold their own while away, or will the road trip derail their early success?

With their stable of guards thinned by injury and no point guard to back up rookie Derrick Rose, the Bulls signed veteran guard Lindsey Hunter on Thursday. The fifteen year veteran spent most of those years with the Detroit Pistons, who drafted him in with the 10th pick of the 1993 draft. After seven years in Motown, he was traded to the Bucks, Lakers, and Raptors in a span of three seasons, before landing back in Detroit for five more years.

Remember when we wondered whether the Bulls' backcourt depth was a blessing or a curse? We're now relieved that the team has so many guards on their roster who justify playing time, because they've had trouble keeping them healthy. Over the weekend, Kirk Hinrich suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb which will relegate him to street clothes for the next 12 weeks. Capt. Kirk, who had missed just 21 games in his first five seasons, could miss half of this one.

Has the sun set on the run-and-gun Phoenix squad? Without coach Mike D'Antoni and with big man Shaq on the bench, the Bulls ran roughshod over Phoenix on their way to a 100-83 win Friday night. Ben Gordon came off the bench to lead all Bulls in scoring with 23 points and rookie sensation Derrick Rose added 18 points and 6 assists. Said Gordon of the Bulls' #1 pick, "Watching him in practice, you can tell right away how special of a talent he is. He really doesn't surprise me with anything he does out there on the floor. I think he hasn't even scratched the surface.'' At one point, the Bulls went on a 16-0 run to go up 31-17 and never let the Suns back in. Rose, a new fan favorite, is taking the popularity in stride: “I was just trying to play basketball today. If they get out of their seats, that's great. I'm really just trying to play basketball.” With the win, the Bulls are .500 at 3-3 and are tied with the Milwaukee Bucks for third place in the division. Next up for the Bulls is a game against Cleveland tonight, their second game in four days against the Cavs.

A year ago, many -- us included -- believed the Bulls were on the verge of competing for the Eastern Conference title, even if it wasn't quite yet time to reserve Grant Park for any rallies. The young Bulls team fell flat on their face and cost Scott Skiles his job on the way to a 33-49 record, missing the playoffs after three consecutive appearances. Tonight, they open the 2008-2009 season at the United Center against the Milwaukee Bucks and their new head coach, Scott Skiles.

In Wednesday's preseason tune-up leading up to their regular season opener next week, Bulls guard Larry Hughes suffered a dislocated shoulder. In the third quarter, Hughes collided with Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Mike Miller while chasing after a loose ball and slumped to the floor in pain.

The Bulls' number one draft pick Derrick Rose,19, was fined $1,000 this morning in Kane County. Rose admitted to driving 106 miles per hour on I-88, where the speed limit is 65. He'll be under "court supervision" for six months and has to complete an online driving school course. [Trib]

Overcoming huge odds against them, the Bulls landed the NBA draft's top pick in last month's draft lottery. On Thursday night, the Bulls used that pick to draft point guard Derrick Rose.

Having won the NBA Draft Lottery, the Bulls are free to select any player available -- but the consensus top two players are power forward Michael Beasley from Kansas State and point guard Derrick Rose of Memphis. With the choice pretty much narrowed to those two, the Bulls are bringing each in for personal workouts and interviews this week.

The Bulls hit the jackpot on Tuesday night, winning the NBA Draft lottery!
