There is a new international polar bear sensation! The yet-unnamed cub at the Tiergarten Nürnberg zoo in Germany is so fucking adorable we think we might die. (more photos) She had to be taken away from her mother because Mama Bear kept dropping her and acting strangely, and the other polar bear in the enclosure ate her two offspring.

So many movies, so little time. How true. Unless you're a professional cinephile, there's no hope of seeing even a fraction of what looks interesting in any given year. We actually tallied up the numbers and between theatrical releases, film festival screenings, and DVDs we've seen 175 movies this year — barely any at all. And with the industry's practice of backloading releases, a veritable midyear drought suddenly giving way to an avalanche of multiple releases at year's end, it's harder than ever to keep up.

It seems like everyone is running for their old seat this year. Ambrosio Medrano in the 25th, Virgil Jones in the 15th Percy Giles in the 37th, and Wallace Davis Jr in the 2nd, all want their old jobs back. Add to that list former 35th Ward alderman Vilma Colom, (the only one, at least on this list), that didn't lose her job to a corruption conviction.

When Chicagoist had our first real job as assistant manager of a Crown Books, we quickly learned the power of suggestion…by Oprah. This was before she actually had a book club or anything. All an author had to do was to was go on her show and whatever book they were talking about was sold out by the end of the program. Soon, the women got wise and would call within the first five minutes. Books we hadn’t touched in months were flying off the shelves. When she decided to sell her own cookbook, we had to beat the housewives away with a stick.
