In another sign of possible things to come at 35th and Shields, last night's contest turned into Mark Buehrle Appreciation night. The Sox southpaw, in the final year of a four-year contract, won what could be his final game in Black and turned in a memorable performance. Buehrle held the Blue Jays scoreless through seven innings. Buehrle's trademark durability will make him a huge commodity in free agency. Last night's game pushed him above 200 innings for the season, extending his personal streak of 30 starts, at least 200 innings pitched and double-digit victories to 11 seasons. Tyler Flowers showed more signs he could be the catcher of the future with a solo home run as the DH while the catcher of the present, AJ Pierzynski, contributed an RBI.
At Petco Park some Cubs were playing for pride. Like Matt Garza, who struck out eight over seven innings of work as he evened his 2011 record at 10-10. Garza received some help from Alfonso Soriano, who hit a three-run shot in the eighth inning to ensure Garza the win. Aramis Ramirez added a solo shot for the Cubs.
