Oh, That's Why My Driver's Wearing Gucci!

Chicago cab drivers don't have it hard enough, with gas prices rising and the long hours, so Alderman Edward Burke has proposed a 2005_09_cabdriver.jpgdress code for cabbies, saying that too many drivers these days make less-than-favorable fashion statements. Kidding? Does this alderman eat foie gras?

Burke thinks cabbies should be prohibited from wearing shorts, tank tops, or sandles and thinks they should instead wear white-collar shirts and badges that say their names. Instead of shorts and sandles, the drivers would have to wear "slacks, socks and matching shoes that are either khaki, navy blue or black."

In his proposal, any driver who ignores the code would be stripped of their licenses and hit with fines of $50 or $100. In exchange for accepting the dress code, Burke says the city might approve the $1 surcharge that the drivers want to offset gas prices.

Chicagoist doesn't really care what our cab driver is wearing, so long as the driver doesn't smell up the car. If that means shorts and a tank top, then we don't mind. We're thinking that this uniform will only make our drivers more agitated, hot and sweaty.. and we all know that when what you're wearing is uncomfortable it just makes us more crazy with traffic. Be comfortable and get us to where we want to go safely, that's what we want. But that's just us...
